Description

Do you dream? Did the pandemic, economic woe and climate crisis make you give up your dream? Do you still dare to dream? The distinguished director Peter Sellars, whose work often explores moral issues through art, will talk to us about dreams—his dream, your dream, our dream, the dream of the youth and for the youth, the dream of the past and the future—all through the lens of art. Peter Sellars is a renowned opera, theater and festival director. He has gained international fame for his groundbreaking, transformative and often provocative interpretations of classics, advocacy of 20th century and contemporary music, and collaborative projects with an extraordinary range of creative and performing artists. He has staged productions at the Dutch National Opera, English National Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opéra national de Paris, and the Salzburg Festival, among others. Some of his most representative projects are John Adams’s Nixon in China and Doctor Atomic; Wagner's Tristan und Isolde with video artist Bill Viola; Mozart's Don Giovanni, and Idomeneo; Desdemona with Toni Morrison and Malian composer/singer Rokia Traoré; Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Berliner Philharmoniker. He also reimagined the 16th-century Chinese classic The Peony Pavilion with the kunqu master Hua Wenyi. A MacArthur fellow, Sellars also receives Erasmus, Gish and Polar Music prizes. He is distinguished professor in World Arts and Cultures/Dance and the founding director of the Boethius Institute at UCLA. He is a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
