Description

Join the Belmont Cragin community as they celebrate Dia de los Muertos. Also known as “Day of the Dead”, Día de Muertos is a tradition-filled day during which families remember the departed and share memories of loved ones. The Northwest Side CDC and Chicago Cares are presenting two days of education, engagement, and creation that honors the tradition. With love, respect, and in partnership with the Belmont Cragin community guests will spend time hearing the backstory of Dia de los Muertos and the tradition of making ofrendas. Ofrendas, or altars, are arrangments honoring loved ones who have passed on. Though there are traditional items that are commonly placed on ofrendas, every ofrenda is special in its own way and often includes personalized elements that are unique to the individual(s) being honored. October 22nd: Día de los Muertos Altar Creation and Storytelling Paired with speakers, artists, and artisans from Mexico and the Northwest Side of Chicago, this collaborative workshop will teach residents, volunteers, and visitors why Día de los Muertos and its traditions have such a cultural significance to the broader Mexican community, while building one community altar! October 29th: Día de los Muertos Celebration! In partnership with Steinmetz High School and local artists, a pop-up art gallery will be on display to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. The gallery will include student art, authentic artisan creations like sugar skulls, and the altars from the previous workshop on display. This is a free, family-friendly event where the community is able to come and bring momentos of a loved one to place on the community altar. We will have a printer on site to print photos of loved ones and we will have kits folks can purchase to support creating a space on the community altar.
