Brookfield Schools Offer Counseling Following Capitol Riots

BROOKFIELD, CT — In the wake of the mayhem at the Capitol on Wednesday, the Brookfield Public Schools will be making resources and counseling available to students, according to Superintendent John Barile. "Disturbing events seen by our children often leave parents wondering how they can support their children," Barile said in an email to families Thursday. "I want to reassure you that the Brookfield Public School's staff are here to provide students and families with support as they may continue to view unsettling images as we watch replayed video of our Capitol under siege. As we consider the possible exposure to these images and events, we know your children will likely seek out answers and support." Although normal in-person opportunities for counseling are hampered due to coronavirus restrictions, Barile said that administrators, teachers, school counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers would be available for students who needed to speak with someone. Parents should call or send an email to schedule an opportunity for such connection. Guidance will be provided by school administration to educators in alignment with the student's developmental stage, Barile said. Barile offered parents tips for speaking with their children about the riots at the Capitol: Let them know that there are trusted adults they can speak to at any time.Model a sense of calm and let your children know that they are safe.Be honest and review current events or information in age-appropriate ways (resources below)Clarify what students might have misunderstood about the images or events that have taken place.Reiterate home and/or school values (tolerance, respect, civility, diversity, reason) as part of the discussion. "The Brookfield Public Schools reject those who support violence and mob rule as a means of problem solving and we will not tolerate such forces of unreason in any form," Barile said. "This is a moment in which we should all unite and stand up for the rule of law."
