In this fun and interactive workshop you will get hands-on skills for mending your clothes. This workshop combines hand embroidery and Sashiko inspired stitching to mend your clothes. An introductory class to hand sewing with visible mending techniques. You'll learn a couple darning techniques for repairing knit garments (think sweaters and socks) and woven garments (think jeans or button downs). Bring an item of clothing you'd like to repair and don't mind practicing on. If you purchase a mending kit you will create a mending sampler to practice stitches during class. Some mending materials will be provided. Optional mending kit available. If you want a specific fabric/darning color to mend with, bring your own. What's covered: Best tools and materials for darningDarning for knit fabricsDarning for woven fabricsA few different embroidery stitches for decorative repairsMaterials: Bring your own materials: thread (all-purpose, embroidery thread), sharp needles and darning needles (needles with a blunt tip), straight pins or safety pins, yarn for darning. Optional mending kit includes: Cotton fabric swatch for practicing, a few small cotton swatches for patching, cotton embroidery thread, cotton Sashiko thread, 5 sharp darning needles, 6 straight pins, and needle threader. Colors will be chosen for you. We will also have all-purpose thread, needles, scissors, fabric for patching, and yarn for repairing knits on hand for use. This is an introductory class and you'll learn skills to mend your clothes. Even if you've never sewn before this class is an introduction to hand sewing. By the end of the class you'll have your own mending sampler you can refer back to again and again. What is Visible Mending? Visible mending is a radical act. By making your clothes last longer you're challenging the way we consume clothing. Visible mending brings attention to your loved clothing that might have otherwise ended up in the landfill. The Location: Helix Cafe has a bright and sunny space with plenty of seating to spread out. You can BYOB and snacks. Helix Cafe is at street level. Settle in for an afternoon of mending in their bright and cozy space.
