Throughout the country, including in Lancaster County, there are groups of people who are trying to get books pulled from school library shelves. The book banners have not had many victories, yet they continue an un-American war of attrition against literature. The targeted books include resources that focus on LGBTQIA+ topics, stories about people of color, and books that recount the trauma experienced by survivors of abuse. These books are important resources to many in the community, but a small vocal minority is demanding that they be removed from shelves.
In celebration of National Book Month in October, let's stand up for free speech and the right to read.
