Alvarez, producer Veronica Nickel, and producer & editor Stacy Goldate (In)Hospitable follows the story of patients and activists as they band together in an effort to fight UPMC, a multi-billion dollar nonprofit hospital behemoth in western Pennsylvania. In its quest for market domination, UPMC was planning to make vital care unaffordable for hundreds of thousands of vulnerable patients. These patients were taxpayers who had been subsidizing this supposedly nonprofit institution whose main mission as a charity was to serve the community. This illuminating documentary tells the inspiring story of these brave patients and activists who, faced with life-or-death consequences, fight to win the battle for their health — and their community. DOWN THE HOUSE By director Tricia Murajda & cinematographer Pavló Fedorov Down the House transports the viewer to the town of Braddock, Pennsylvania. Once the epicenter of the U.S. Steel Industry, the steel production in the region helped build the U.S. and win WWI and WWII. Abandoned and facing economic implosion in the 1980s, the town lost nearly all of its population and its grasp on the American Dream. As former Mayor John Fetterman once described Braddock, "90% of our city is in a landfill somewhere." From urban farming to revitalization through artistry and mutual aid, the residents of Braddock struggle to survive and thrive, living in the remnants of a more vibrant age and reimagining the next incarnation of the town in the shell of the old. CONSUMED BY GRIEF By director Jose Muniain & cinematographer Mark Knobil Consumed by Grief is a collaboration with Italian photographer Nicolò Filippo Rosso. Rosso has been documenting migration movements across South, Central, and North America since 2018. In 2021, Rosso was awarded the Eugene Smith Award for Humanitarian Photography for his project Exodus, which is about the tens of thousands of migrants fleeing Central American countries from violence, climate change, and economic collapse.
