Description

In partnership with the Shelby County Historical Society, Klein Arts & Culture will honor our board member Albert "Peter" Datcher for the Historical Society's naming its new Enslaved Peoples Database for him. The event will be at the historic Wallace House, on which Mr. Datcher's ancestor Lucy Wallace Baker (pictured above) was enslaved. A reception will be held at 2 pm on November 6 at the House. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the 1841 Wallace House and grounds, understand its history, and learn about Klein Arts & Culture, the nonprofit organization that owns and programs the house. Tony M. Bingham’s Bearing Witness: Praise House - Sun Shadows, the first site-specific sculpture on the grounds, is based on the spiritual practices of the enslaved and their descendants. Bingham’s exhibit, Vessels for Aunt Daisy, and Peter Datcher’s exhibit of Wallace-family genealogy and descendant achievements occupy two rooms of the house. Elijah Gaddis, assistant professor of history and African American studies at Auburn University, will speak at the event. A special recognition of Peter Datcher for his contributions to African American history will take place. Refreshments will be provided. The event is free, but Eventbrite reservations are encouraged.
