WILL COUNTY, IL — The United Way of Will County received more than $360,000 in federal funds to supplement agencies and nonprofit programs providing emergency food and shelter in local communities. The funds came from the Department of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food & Shelter National Board Program, according to a news release. In the last phase of funding, the United Way of Will County was given nearly $690,000 which it awarded to seven agencies selected by an independent, volunteer review panel. A local board is charged with distributing these funds to help expand local organizations' capacity for providing shelter and food to community members in high-need areas. Funding will be provided for priority areas including mass shelter, other shelter, served meals, other foods, rent and mortgage assistance and utility assistance. Local agencies chosen to receive funds must be a private nonprofit or agencies of government, eligible to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, practice non-discrimination, have existing emergency food and/or shelter programs, must have a voluntary board if a private organization, and submit an online application. More agencies and nonprofits will be able to apply for funds. Applications are due to the United Way of Will County by Jan. 22.
