Description

Join us as we journey to rediscover the rich 100-year story of the first high school in southwest Virgina to educate the formerly enslaved, the historic Christiansburg Institute. 'Christiansburg Institute: A Proud Heritage' is written from the perspective of Pulaski native, CI alumni and instructor, Ms.Amanda DeHart. This powerful text shares the trials, tribulations, joy, and successes experienced by students, their families, and educators at the school during it's operation. Beginning in 1866, the DeHart covers the founding of the school, it's significant growth at the turn of the 19th century, and its eventual closure in 1966. Collaborative Learning | Affirmations & Accountability: CI's Approach to Education (Learning, Knowing, and Doing) is intentionally collaborative, participatory, and honest. We affirm that knowledge and wisdom is experienced universally; across many races, cultures, and civilizations. We affirm and celebrate that collaborative, community-based participatory learning is an educational model, disrupter of institutional power, and community organizing strategy. We affirm that accountability in practice requires truth-telling and our collaborations are more powerful when anchored in accountability. We affirm the truth that the honest telling and education of African American history, culture, and experiences in the United States is a paramount objective for all. We affirm that all knowledge and study must address social inequities, community needs, and facilitate meaningful action that leads to social transformation.
