CALIFORNIA — Macy's plans to close three dozen stores nationwide in 2021, including two in California, according to multiple reports. The California stores slated for closure are at Hilltop Mall in Richmond and Parkway Plaza in El Cajon, according to USA Today. Macy's is also the parent company of Bloomingdale's, and plans to close its store in Santa Monica. Macy's said the Richmond closure would happen between March 14-27, and some 133 employees would be laid off, according to Mayor Tom Butt. Clearance sales at all locations are expected to begin this month and run for eight to 12 weeks, officials said. >> Macy's To Close Store At Hilltop Mall The closures will leave California with 94 Macy's stores, according to the company's store directory: ArcadiaBakersfieldBreaBurbankCanoga ParkCapitolaCarlsbadCerritosChula VistaCitrus HeightsCity Of IndustryConcordCorte MaderaCosta MesaCulver CityDaly CityDowneyEl CentroEscondidoFairfieldFresnoGlendaleHaywardLa MesaLakewoodLos AngelesManhattan BeachMission ViejoModestoMontclairMontebelloMontereyMoreno ValleyNational CityNewarkNewport BeachNorthridgePalm DesertPalmdalePalo AltoPasadenaPleasantonRancho CucamongaReddingRedondo BeachRiversideRosevilleSacramentoSalinasSan BernardinoSan DiegoSan FranciscoSan JoseSan LeandroSan MateoSan RafaelSanta AnaSanta BarbaraSanta ClaraSanta ClaritaSanta MariaSanta RosaSherman OaksSimi ValleyStocktonTemeculaThousand OaksTorranceTracyUnion CityVenturaVictorvilleVisaliaWalnut CreekWest Covina Macy's told the Chicago Tribune that the closures are "part of the company's strategy to right-size its store fleet, announced in early 2020." Macy's announced earlier this year that it would right-size in response to the coronavirus pandemic, which hit retailers hard. Macy's in particular has reported a 20 percent quarterly decline in same-store sales. Plans include closing 125 large department stores in favor of smaller stores under 20,000 square feet, Forbes reported in September. That's in addition to more than 100 stores the retailer has shuttered since 2015. See the full list of nationwide Macy's store closures in USA Today. — Written by Patch editors Bea Karnes and J.
