Ali-Khan’s new book, A Good Country: My Life in Twelve Towns and the Devastating Battle for a White America, traces her pathway as the daughter of Pakistani immigrants, college student, professional, mother, and a Muslim across twelve American communities. The stories she recounts reveal how history—recognized, obscured, or hidden in plain sight—shapes communities and haunts the stories of America. Ms. Ali-Khan will be joined by Ms. Vickie Oldham and Dr. Uzi Baram, for dialogue and discussion on the issues of memory, history, and the struggle for reaching that “good country.” Ms. Oldham will describe the steps and the current development of an African American museum/cultural center in Newtown, the historically Black neighborhoods of Sarasota.
Sofia Ali-Khan, is social-justice lawyer, author, and New College alumna.
Vickie Oldham is CEO and President of the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition. She has catalyzed public archaeology and public history in Sarasota/Manatee for two decades.
Uzi Baram is Professor of Anthropology at New College.
