Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the 1841 Wallace House and grounds, understand its history, and learn about Klein Arts & Culture, the nonprofit organization that owns and programs the house. Tony M. Bingham’s Bearing Witness: Praise House - Sun Shadows, the first site-specific sculpture on the grounds, is based on the spiritual practices of the enslaved and their descendants. Bingham’s exhibit, Vessels for Aunt Daisy, and Peter Datcher’s exhibit of Wallace family genealogy and descendant achievements occupy two rooms of the house. An introduction will be given by Nell Gottlieb, President of the Board of Klein Arts & Culture. Special guest speakers include Theoangelo Perkins, Vice President of Klein Arts & Culture and Mayor of Harpersville, and Elijah Gaddis, assistant professor of history and African American studies at Auburn University. A special recognition of Peter Datcher for his contributions to African American history will take place, followed by a tour of the house. Refreshments will be provided. The event is free, but Eventbrite reservations are encouraged.
