... Jim Crow reparations? Is this a refusal to admit wrong doing? “White people” as a class are not guilty of slavery. Neither are blacks, despite the fact that Europeans didn’t go beating around the bush in Africa catching blacks, they bought them from other blacks right at the coast. In point of fact, the Dahomey tribe, the subject of that silly Woman King movie, were some of the most prodigious slavers in Africa. Yet I don’t hear anyone clambering to any African nations pay reparations for selling other blacks as slaves. Furthermore, it was white abolitionists that saw the end of slavery in Europe and America. White men fought other white men because they thought slavery was so profoundly wrong that they were willing to pledge their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to the endeavor of seeing the practice end. England in particular was instrumental in ending the slave trade, spending a fortune over half a century on fielding the West Africa Squadron, whose sole purpose was to suppress the slave trade. So if you are of a mind to blame white people, as a class, for the wrongs of slavery, you must likewise credit whites, as a class, with ending slavery. Because it wasn’t some pluckly little band of black Hollywood-esque heroes fighting the dastardly white slavers and pulling off a stunning victory, it was decades of concerted action by whites, and others, to see the end of slavery. One of my own ancestors died in the American Civil War fighting for the Union. My line never owned slaves and yet has already paid reparations in blood. And now you dare demand more? No man alive was a slave in the United States and no man alive owned slaves in the United States, and the question of who actually descends from slave owners, who from slaves, and who who had no part in the business, is an irreparable tangle. And do not blather to me about “oh but government taxes will pay!” Child, from whom do you think the government gets its tax money? The People. You would quite likely see the insane situation of some black fellow being paid off with reparations funded by his own damn tax money. So show me the man who held another as a slave, and from him you may collect your pound of flesh, but from no other.
