Description

Circles Salt Lake inspires and equips the community to reduce poverty and remove the barriers that trap families and individuals in poverty. We gather middle-income and high-income volunteers to support families in poverty. These volunteers which we call Allies, are crucial to the Circles model. Allies will have landed jobs, negotiated leases, managed credit card debt, or obtained a higher education, so Allies can share these experiences with our participants to better equip them for long-term financial stability. There are other opportunities to get involved with Circles Salt Lake including working with the children during our weekly Thursday meetings as well as serving on a Resource Team. During Part 1 (October 19th), we will be exploring the Circles model: the roles of Circles Leaders, Allies, Children’s Program Volunteers, Resource Team members, and Circles staff. We’ll provide examples of success in each of these roles and answer questions. We'll also have an activity which will demonstrate how you can support someone in poverty. To wrap up the evening, we'll explore a little material from the Bridges Out of Poverty book.Bridges Out of Poverty provides a framework for understanding poverty. Often, people in poverty face challenges virtually unknown to those in the middle class or wealth- challenges from obvious and hidden sources. From the Bridges Out of Poverty material, we will review mental models of each economic class and the causes for poverty. In Part 2 (October 26th), we will continue to explore material from Bridges Out of Poverty by discussing hidden rules, language registers, story structures, and voices. This event is held in two parts and hosted at our local community center. We encourage current allies, current volunteers, and new individuals who are interested in getting involved to attend these training opportunities. It is free of charge and dinner will be provided. We will also be providing free copies of the Bridges Out of Poverty book. We ask that you RSVP at least 24 hours in advance so we have sufficient food and materials. Please reach out to Britanee with Circles Salt Lake if you have any questions about this event. b[email protected]
