Let's go out on a Low Note

Description

I’m a singer/songwriter/guitarist working with a drummer, but we're really missing bass. Our music is quite a mix. You’ll hear elements of folk, pop, jazz, Celtic, twee, even grunge in the guitar, and the drummer has one foot in classic rock and one in hip hop. At the risk of sounding pompous, I don’t think there’s a name for our genre. I could imagine many different "bass" instruments working well, starting with the tried and true 4-string electric bass. But there are a number of songs that could really benefit from a low B string, even drop-A. Upright bass could be mind-blowing with all of the percussive undertones and the ability to bow. Or keys! Especially if your keyboard splits so your left hand is playing bass and you right hand is playing, like, vibraphone or whatever. Maybe you make low notes on something less common like tuba or reed contrabass? Let's try it! We’re pretty new to playing together so we don’t yet have anything recorded. I have several songs on BandCamp, which approximate the sound we're aiming for. The guitars and electric bass are me, and the drums are GarageBand-generated. Here are a couple to start with: https://smolsnail.bandcamp.com/track/hiraeth https://smolsnail.bandcamp.com/track/i-believe-in-magic A bit about us, non-musically: we’re both working parents in what they call the middle age. We’re not in it for the world tours and the record deals. We just love making music. We want to gig around the area, and recording is also something we’re working on via home-studios. We’ll probably get along well with you if you’re not inclined to say things like “all lives matter” or “not all men” or things like that. FWIW, I'm a White they/them and the drummer is a Black he/him. Thanks, Ama
