ILLINOIS — Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL, 6) is calling for Trump to be impeached after Wednesday's insurrection at the nation's Capitol. Casten posted on social media Wednesday, calling the actions an "attempted coup" and "one of the darkest moments in our nation's history."
Hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Wednesday as lawmakers were certifying Biden's victory over Trump. A 35-year-old woman was shot and killed during the rioting and three other people died after medical emergencies, according to police.
Casten blamed Trump for the insurrection, saying, "We must not only stand up to this treasonous President and his insurrectionist mob, but to the elected officials who helped incite yesterday's violence and see them stripped of their power to continue their assault on our democracy."
He went on to say that Trump presents a "grave threat to the continuity of our government, and our democracy. He must be removed from office immediately, and I am calling on the House to impeach, and for Vice President Pence, in parallel to initiate removal via the 25th Amendment."
Casten was joined by Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-IL, 14) in calling for Trump's impeachment. Other lawmakers throughout Illinois condemned Trump for what they called a "coup attempt" at the U.S. Capitol.
