Description

Our opening concert features two very special works—one by Johannes Brahms and rarely heard, and the other a season world premiere, never before heard, by the spectacular young American composer, Jesse Montgomery! The performance also features the exhilarating young Cuban-American cellist Thomas Mesa, “one of the most charismatic, innovative, and engaging performers of his generation,” and the winner of the 2016 Sphinx Competition among many other honors and recognitions. Mesa has been given the exclusive rights to perform Jesse Montgomery’s new work, Divided, for cello and strings in its inaugural season, and we are delighted to host one of the first performances! He will also perform the delightful Pezzo Capriccioso by Tchaikovsky. Opening the program is the highly exuberant Jubilee from Boston composer George Whitfield Chadwick’s American Sketches (circa 1900). Bright and tuneful, the work sings of Walt Whitman’s happier view of his country. And finally, Arnold Schoenberg’s artful and imaginative transcription of Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 1 will touch and enliven you. You’ll be fascinated by the way a 20th century composer set one of most stirring and heartfelt chamber music works for a large and sumptuous orchestra!
