When the 2nd Amendment was written, we were an occupied land. King George had blockaded the entire east coast to prevent us from purchasing firearms. We had no police, armed forces or national law enforcement agencies. We had a band of dirt poor, starving farmers, who became our paid military (the militia) to battle the mighty British Empire.
It is interesting how when politicians try to ram their wills down the throats of the electorate, that unexpected consequences are side effects. For five decades, conservatives egged on by evangelical Christians have battled to overturn Roe v Wade. They finally got their will when Donald Trump stacked the court with three, political agenda, right wing extremists (for an allegedly non-political life sentence appointment.) Most constitutional scholars believe these "ultra conservative" justices, when presented the right case will argue we no longer have need of a "well armed militia" and strike down the 2nd Amendment. hmmm
