Admission is Free. The program starts at 5:30 PM at the Museum of Native American History. The 1st Michigan Sharp Shooters Company K consisted of 146 men total. Most of these men were (139 men total) were Anishnaabek Indigenous people of theGreat Lakes. The Anishnaabek consisted of Odawa, Ottawa, Ojibway, Chippewa, and Potawatomi tribes. So only six men were not Anishnaabek Indigenous peoples. The 1st Michigan Sharp Shooters was the largest all Indian regiment in the Union army east of the Mississippi River. Three books have been written about the Company. They are Sally M. Walker, Deadly Aim: The Civil War Story of Michigan's Anishinaabe Sharpshooters, 2019, Raymond J. Herek, These Men Have Had Hard Fighting: The First Michigan Sharpshooters in the Civil War, 1998, and Chris Czopek, Who Was Who in Company K: Reliable Facts About Native American Soldiers in Company K, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters, During the Civil War, 1861-1865, 2015.
