It’s been described as a hybrid coffee table book, but Lyle Greenfield’s 1000 Days in St. Barth is more than a collection of beautiful photographs (though there are many). It is, as the cover states, “A memoir with special guests.” A collection of engaging tales from his many visits to this storied island in the French West Indies over a period of 38 years, as well as profiles of some of the most interesting and creative people he’s encountered there, including Chef Jean-Georges, Clic and Calypso founder Christiane Celle, three-time president Bruno Magras, fashion photographer Camellia Menard and Frances DeBroff, creator of the St. Barts Music Festival. There are even a few modern-day “Pirates of the Caribbean” found in these pages (including one who fleeced the author). In addition to the island’s obvious allure, Greenfield finds striking similarities between St. Barth and The Hamptons, and the challenges posed to both culture and environment by the influx of extraordinary wealth coupled with rapid development. * * * Lyle Greenfield is the author of The Soul Mate Expeditions, a collection of short stories and letters, and the mystery-thriller novella, What Vienna Saw. He began his career in New York City as a copywriter for the ad agency J. Walter Thompson and later for the Saatchi agency as a creative director. He is the founder of Bang Music in New York and a founding member and former president of the Association of Music Producers (AMP). Greenfield has written extensively about music and popular culture for the industry magazine Shootonline. He and his wife Mary Jane reside in Amagansett and in New York City.
