Description

Matthew Heise is a native of Dearborn Heights, Michigan and no matter where his travels have taken him, has remained a lifelong member of Guardian Lutheran in Dearborn. He has a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and a Master’s Degree in European History from Wayne State University (Detroit). After teaching and coaching in a Detroit Catholic high school, he served for two years as a volunteer ESL missionary for LCMS World Mission in Moscow. The mission bug proving difficult to extract, he then entered Concordia Seminary in St. Louis where he studied for the Master’s Degree in Divinity. Upon graduation from the seminary, he served as a theological educator for thirteen years at LCMS World Mission, returning to Russia and also teaching in Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Belarus and Ukraine. He received his Ph.D. in May 2018 from Concordia Seminary. He also contributed to Dictionary of Luther and the Lutheran Traditions published by Baker Academic Press in 2017. His book was published by Lexham Press in May 2022 (The Gates of Hell: An Untold Story of Faith and Perseverance in the Early Soviet Union). He is married to Raziyeh Heise, a medical institute graduate from Bogomils University in Kyiv and a Ukrainian citizen. Since April 2014, he has been serving as the Executive Director for the Lutheran Heritage Foundation, based in Macomb, Michigan.
