Free, annual festival is open to anyone of any age interested in the prickly pear cactus. It will be held at the Holland Center in far North Scottsdale, about 15 miles north of the 101 using the Scottsdale exit and going north almost to the Carefree Hwy and the towns of Carefree and Cave Creek.
It is worth the drive because the festival is hosted by one of the most friendly, caring educational groups I've seen: the Desert Awareness Committee. They put on a terrific festival with:
*Tasting booths of salsas, drinks, and desserts
*Demonstration booths about how to use the fruits (tunas) and the pads (nopales).
Nothing costs anything there unless you want to buy their Prickly Pear Cookbook to help them raise funds.
The Desert Awareness Committee has been the community resource advocate for the Sonoran Desert since 1974. Their mission is to educate residents and visitors so that they may join us in understanding, conserving and preserving our diverse and fragile desert; its plants, animals, water, and wildlife. Led by Diane Vaszily and several other vibrant women!
