On Friday, November 4 from 7:30-9 pm, four luminaries come together to map the emotional, physical, and spiritual courses of our lives through poetry. The theme of the evening: journeys. Featuring poets Diane DeCillis, Cal Freeman, Zilka Joseph, and Peter Markus. This is a FREE event, but your RSVP is very helpful to our planning. Learn more about health and safety at Booksweet. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Diane DeCillis began her second career as a writer after a three decade long career of owning and curating an award-winning gallery. Soon after this career change, the Detroit native’s poetry collection Strings Attached was named a 2015 Michigan Notable Book, winner of the 2015 Next Generation Indie Book Award for Poetry, and a finalist for the Indie Fab Award for Poetry. Today, Diane continues her journey as a writer through her authorship of several books, poetry, short stories, and playwriting. Her most recent collection is When the Heart Needs a Stunt Double (WSU Press). Diane conducts workshops and events live and via Zoom upon request. For this event, Diane will be reading poetry from Strings Attached and When the Heart Needs a Stunt Double. Cal Freeman was born and raised in Detroit. He is the author of the books Brother Of Leaving and Fight Songs. His writing has appeared in many journals including New Orleans Review, Passages North, The Journal, Commonweal, Drunken Boat, and The Poetry Review. He is a recipient of The Devine Poetry Fellowship (judged by Terrance Hayes); he has also been nominated for multiple Pushcart Prizes in both poetry and creative nonfiction. He regularly reviews collections of poetry for the radio program Stateside on Michigan Public Radio. He currently lives in Dearborn, MI and teaches at Oakland University. For this event, Cal will be reading poetry from his latest book Poolside at the Dearborn Inn. Zilka Joseph's work is influenced by Indian and Western cultures, and her Bene Israel roots. She has authored five collections, and her work has appeared in several prominent US and international journals and anthologies. Her books have been nominated for PEN America and Pushcart awards. and her recent chapbook Sparrows and Dust won a Notable Best Indie Book award. She was awarded a Zell Fellowship, the Michael R. Gutterman prize, and the Elsie Choy Lee Scholarship from the University of Michigan. Her new book In Our Beautiful Bones is a Foreword INDIES award finalist. She teaches creative writing workshops, is a manuscript advisor, and a mentor to writers in her community. www.zilkajoseph.com. For this event, Zilka will be reading poems from her new books Sparrows and Dust and In Our Beautiful Bones. Peter Markus is the author of a novel, Bob, or Man on Boat, as well as five other books of fiction including The Fish and the Not Fish, a Michigan Notable Book of 2015. His fiction has appeared widely in anthologies and journals including Chicago Review, Iowa Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, Black Warrior Review, Quarterly West, Massachusetts Review, Northwest Review, among many others. He was awarded a Kresge Arts in Detroit fellowship in 2012 and his non-fiction book Inside My Pencil chronicles over two decades of work as a teaching artist with InsideOut Literary Arts. For this event, Peter will be reading from his latest collection of poems, When Our Fathers Return to Us as Bird, published by Wayne State University Press (Made in Michigan Series).
