UWS HS Senior Named As Finalist For National Math Contest

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — An Upper West Side high school senior was recently announced as a finalist in a nationwide math and science talent search and competition. The Society for Science revealed Thursday the top 300 scholars' names in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2021, which is considered the nation's oldest science and math competition for high school seniors. Earning a spot on the list of finalists was Foyez Alauddin, a senior at the Trinity School on 139 West 91st Street. The 300 high school scholars were selected from 1,760 applicants from 611 schools across 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and 10 countries. Scholars were chosen "based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovating thinking and promise as scientists," according to a news release. In 2020, the submitted research projects included topics from bioinformatics to public health and energy efficiency. Alauddin and the 0ther 299 selected finalists received $2,000 awards with an additional $2,000 going to their respective schools. The competition is far from over, though. On Jan. 21, 40 of the 300 scholars will be named a Regeneron Science Talent Seach finalist. From there the 40 finalists will compete for more than $1.8 million in awards. Alumni of the coveted science and math honors recipients have won a staggering 13 Nobel Prizes, 11 National Medals of Science, six Breakthrough Prizes, 21 MacArthur Foundation Fellowships, and two Fields Medals.
