The acclaimed novelist and memoirist James McBride headlines the fifth-annual Anita and Antonio Gotto Lecture at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. His lecture is entitled "Faith, 'Fiction' and Race." McBride is the author of seven books, including The Good Lord Bird (2013), a historical novel about the abolitionist John Brown, which received the National Book Award. The Color of Water (1996), his account of growing up in an African American family in Brooklyn led by his white Jewish mother, spent two years on the New York Times bestseller list. His most recent novel, Deacon King Kong (2020), a tale of crime lords and church folks in 1960s Brooklyn, received the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction last year. In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded McBride the National Humanities Medal "for humanizing the complexities of discussing race in America.” Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in Manhattan and First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, Queens, are co-hosting this event. Doors will open at 6:15 pm, and all seats are general admission. Please arrive early to present your ticket(s) and pass through security. Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church is on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 55th Street in midtown Manhattan. Entrance to the venue is on Fifth Avenue. If you are traveling by subway, the church is within walking distance of the N R Q lines (Fifth Avenue station), the E M lines (53rd/Fifth Avenue station), the B D E lines (Seventh Avenue station), the 4 5 6 lines (59th Street/Lexington Avenue station) and the A B C D 1 lines (Columbus Circle station). The nearest bus stops are for the M57, M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 and Q32 lines. Street parking is extremely limited. There are parking garages within walking distance on West 55th and West 56th Streets. What time should I arrive? It is best to arrive early to choose your seat. Doors will open at 6:15 pm at the Fifth Avenue entrance only (708 Fifth Avenue at West 55th Street). Is the venue accessible? There is an accessible entrance at 7 W. 55th St., half a block west of Fifth Avenue. Are masks required?
