PHOENIX — The Macy's at Paradise Valley Mall is one of 36 stores set to close across the U.S. this year, the retailer announced. Just one day after announcing more store closures, Macy's revealed the unlucky stores to close their doors by mid-2021. Paradise Valley Mall's location was among the casualties. Bloomingdale's, which is also owned by Macy's Inc., will also liquidate its Santa Monica, California store with others set to follow suit. The Macy's at Park Place Mall in Tucson also recently closed for good. Jeff Genette, the company's chairman and CEO, said Macy's is taking stock of its stores as they recover from the coronavirus pandemic, according to USA Today. "Retail today has been disrupted. And while that disruption creates challenges, it also holds opportunity," Gennette said on the company's September quarterly earnings call. "With many competitors closing or struggling, we see the potential to bring new customers into our brands and gain market share." Macy's announced a three-year plan to close roughly 125 locations around the country in February 2020, right before the pandemic forced stores to temporarily close their doors in March. As of Oct. 31, Macy's Inc. had 764 total locations, including 544 Macy's locations, 54 Bloomingdales's stores and 166 Bluemercury shops.
