I Am is an innovative program presented by HREI and NexGen Learning Institute, LLC in partnership with various community organizations. This program takes an exceptional approach to developing cultural and self-identity, specifically for youth in the foster care system in Kootenai and Bonner counties. Training for foster parents and/or guardians is a key component of the I Am program. Nature immersion, mindfulness, and place-based programming are foundational aspects of the I Am curriculum.
Workshops will be held quarterly for I Am youth participants and their parents/guardians. These workshops are designed to help youth and their families build cultural and self identity skills, explore existing biases through multicultural education, and connect to community partners to build or enhance a sense of place connection and collaboration. Workshops will feature activities and discussions by various community members from the fields of education and psychology. Similar to the I Am summer camp program, workshops will have activities (e. g., kayaking, sailing, snowshoeing).
