Description

The Founding Fathers who created America were liberals. What did they accomplish? A new country. A land that welcomed people from different countries. They created a Constitution and lived by it. They had a President who accepted the job and walked away instead of seizing power. They inspired more countries to seek a democracy. They argued but worked together! All of this was done by a bunch of Americans who thought that there had to be a better government than what they had. The ultimate liberals, our Founding Fathers: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, John Adams, John Jay, and Samuel Adams. MEDICARE - Did you know that in the 1950s people over the age of 65 were the most likely to be living in poverty? You can’t get health insurance if you’re over 65 so you pay for your own coverage. After Medicare, people over the age of 65 are now the least likely to be living in poverty. SOCIAL SECURITY - Did you know that most old people lost their life savings in the bank crashes of the 1930s? Thanks to Social Security, that never happened again. FLOOD INSURANCE - Did you know that insurance companies won’t insure you against floods? However, the federal government will. THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM - When Ike was a young lieutenant he led an expedition to drive across the United States. It took him six weeks and he lost half his vehicles. Now you can do it in three days between any two points on either coast and your car will be just fine. Oh, and most of the way will be free. If you drive from New York City to Buffalo, it costs about $20 in tolls for a passenger car. NATIONAL AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL - In the 1950s, two passenger planes crashed into each other over the Grand Canyon. They had both decided to divert to give the passengers a sightseeing tour. After that, the government set up a national radar tracking system. FREDDIE MAC, SALLIE MAE and the other agencies that make it easier to borrow money for things like buying a home or getting a college education. THE SPACE PROGRAM - Man on the moon. Robots on Mars. Oh, and one of the side benefits of that program was the development of integrated circuits or, as we know them “the things that allow you to put more computing power in your pocket than NASA had in 1969”. And on and on.... Conservatives are the ones who always have their hands out looking for more free stuff.
