Description
I am reluctantly looking to rehome my alligator snapping turtle. I am just no longer able to give him the attention he deserves, and I think he would do better with another experienced keeper.
He was captive bred in southern Missouri about 4 years ago. His shell is about 10"-12" long, but he appears larger when you include the tail and large head. It is best to feed him fish, whenever possible, but I also feed him a raw shrimp, chicken livers and gizzards, beef heart, and similar raw foods (that can be found at Walmart). I usually feed him raw shrimp since the water in his tank stays cleaner.
This is not the common snapping turtle that you find in Minnesota. Alligator snapping turtles would NOT survive a Minnesota winter, so you must have a plan for keeping him inside when the temps drop below 50F (or keep him inside year-round). I can provide other information on their care if needed. Let me know if you have any questions.
The rehoming fee for the turtle is $450.
I also have a 60 gallon stock tank that you can have for $50, but keep in mind that he will eventually need a larger tank. I believe he is a male, and males get larger than females for this species.
There is also a high-powered, Fluval FX4 canister filter that you can have for $200. These water filters are really good, and necessary, for any kind of snapping turtle. Alternatively, you can buy a water pump a build a DIY canister filter for less cost (search YouTube for those instructions). Again, please let me know if you have any questions.
