Traditional Kintsugi Ceramic Repair Class

Kintsugi (金継ぎ, gold joinery) is a 500+ years old Japanese traditional practice to repair ceramics/potteries. The traditional method uses all natural materials throughout the whole process. Repaired pieces will be food-contact safe, waterproof, and heatproof up to hot food temperature once the materials are completely cured. This sustainable method requires time to cure, that tells how Kintsugi was developed with Japanese tea culture in 15 century. One ceramic piece repair usually takes at least a few weeks, and a difficult piece would take a few months to a year. The class will be taught by Emi Joyce: formerly a full-time bench jeweler and apparel designer, currently a Kintsugi restorer and natural dyer. Her Kintsugi Instagram; @modernkintsugirepairpdx Urushi lacquer is used throughout the process - gluing, filling, and coating. Urushi is a natural tree resin and belongs to the cashew family which includes poison ivy and mango. Allergy-resistant lacquer is used during the class, although disposable gloves must be worn while handling the raw lacquer to avoid allergic reactions. A waiver form will be emailed to participants and must be turned in before the class. A starter kit is available for participants upon purchase, $70 (2 kinds of urushi lacquer, brushes, mineral powders, alternative gold powder, and other basic materials). For beginners, ceramics must be glazed, cracks must be within 5 pieces and chips must be within 1/2 inches. While Instant Kintsugi method using epoxy glue works to repair ceramic in a couple of hours, Traditional method takes a few weeks to complete the repair process. You can learn the traditional Kintsugi technique at your own pace. Taking 3-4 classes is recommended to learn the basic processes. For example, 1st class: gluing, 2nd: filling and sanding, 3rd: coating lacquer and dusting gold powder. That could be the fastest way, but you also can learn how to take care of tools and materials including making a DIY spatula, creating a large missing piece, and so on take a while. Different ceramics show different characters to understand the Kintsugi skills. Continuing more classes is to improve your skills and knowledge to master the whole process. If you still want to take just one class, Emi will demonstrate different processes during the class. 2-hr class 10/22, 11/9, 11/12, 12/7, 12/10 Wednesday class starts at 11:30 AM.
