Description
Muslim Health Professionals (MHP) and MAPS-MCRC are partnering to host a follow up event on autism and intellectual disabilities for the Muslim community. We are hosting representatives from several local organizations that serve people with autism and other disabilities, and help them access educational and community resources. The organizations represented include: Kindering (https://www.kindering.org/) provides early intervention services for children ages birth to 10, through therapists, inclusive toddler preschool classes, family co-op classes, as well as resources for parent and sibling support members. The Arc of King County (https://arcofkingcounty.org/) serves people with disabilities from prenatal diagnosis through end of life care. Their programs include: Information and Family Support; Supported Living Services for adults living in the community; Representative Payee for individuals needing financial management assistance; Homelessness Prevention; and Advocacy for people with disabilities, family members, and community allies seeking to make our community more systemically equitable for all.The Washington State Governor’s Office of the Education Ombuds (https://www.oeo.wa.gov/en) is an independent state agency aimed at reducing educational opportunity gaps by supporting families, students, educators, and other stakeholders in the K-12 school system. OEO works informally with families, communities, and schools to address concerns so that every student can fully participate and thrive in our state’s public schools. Open Doors for Multicultural Families (https://www.multiculturalfamilies.org/) provides culturally and linguistically relevant information, services, and programming to diverse families of persons with disabilities, especially immigrants, refugees, and/or people of color. Their staff speaks over 20 different languages and helps families navigate the complex systems surrounding developmental disabilities and special education in their own language. Please join us for an informative evening as we learn from these organizations. Whether you are an individual with disability, a caregiver or family member, or simply an ally, please join so we can learn how to make our community spaces more inclusive and accessible for all! This event will be in-person as well as live-streamed on the MAPS Facebook and YouTube channels.
