If you're new to papermaking, learn the basic techniques of Western-style hand papermaking, including pulp preparation, sheet forming, couching, pressing, and drying. For those who are new to binding, we will cover all the basics, including appropriate materials and tools, qualities of paper, and the different properties of various adhesives. A typical introduction course will include a variety of structures such as a pamphlet stitch, accordion, and a Japanese stab binding.Take both workshops or just one…either way you will have fun learning new art-making techniques! Workshop I: During this workshop, learn the basic techniques of Western-style hand papermaking using a mould and deckle. The plant-based pulp is made from recycled cotton t-shirts. Each person will create a number of 11”x 14” pieces of handmade paper! Western-Style Papermaking:  Date: November 12, 2022Time: 10 a.m. -12:00 p.m.Where: Tupper ArtsWho: 12 yrs – adultMax 12 participantsWorkshop II: Paper to Book!: We will use the paper you made in workshop I to make two books! Why make a book when you can purchase one? Artists have been making their own books for centuries. Throughout the ages artists were drawn to book construction because of the creative freedom and independence it allowed them. Create two of your very own soft-cover books! First, warm up with a three- signature soft covered book using a pamphlet stitch and then learn the makings of a soft covered book using a Japanese stab stitch binding. Participants will learn how to plan, punch, fold and bind their folios, creating their very own handmade books. They can then decorate their new books with stamps, stencils or decorative paper.
