This month the Hispanic Leaders' Network's Conectar - Connect features a very important topic, "Demystifying the Mental Health Stigma: It's okay to talk about it!" Spanish Version: "Desmitificando el Estigma de la Salud Mental: Esta bien hablar de eso!" This topic is important because people in the Hispanic/Latinx community can be very private and may not want to publicly talk about challenges at home, work, school, or in their lives. This can continue the cycle of stigma about mental health within the community, as talking about it can be viewed as taboo. Many in the Hispanic community are familiar with the phrase “la ropa sucia se lava en casa” (similar to “don’t air your dirty laundry in public”). Some people do not seek treatment for mental health out of fear of being labeled or bringing shame and unwanted attention to their families. Stigma within the Hispanic community can also lead to a lack of information as individuals may not recognize the symptoms of mental health conditions or know where to seek help. In turn, this may cause individuals to not seek treatment. To be responsible and effective leaders in our community it's important that we are doing our part to take care of ourselves and the people we care about. Together, let's break the cycle of stigma about mental health. This topic is aligned to HLN's Leadership Development strategic goal initiative. This event is sponsor by Baylor Scott and White Medical Center. Lunch will be provided. HLN is inclusive and everyone is welcomed. Registration is required.
