Description
Come and join us for our sixth annual Victorian Tea Reception from 3pm-6pm on Saturday, December 3rd at the historic Lasker Inn, located at 1019 16th Street in Galveston. As it is considered a semi-formal event with Victorian sensibilities , please choose your attire accordingly. Period costume is encouraged but not required. Adults and children 12 and over are invited to join the party by purchasing advance tickets here on Eventbrite .What Is An “Afternoon Tea Reception” vs. “High Tea”?.... The most elaborate and formal of teas is the afternoon tea reception. Historically speaking, the tradition of a more formal light meal was begun in early Victorian times by friend to the Queen, the Duchess of Bedford. Often, it was served in the afternoon preceeding a special evening of dancing and socializing. Therefore, guests would arrive in their evening attire to a muti-coursed light meal of excellent variety and flavor! The term “high tea” has been erroneously adopted in the U.S. to signify something special and dressy, when it was historically an afternoon meal served to hungry workers while standing up at a “high table”. Our Menu.... You will be welcomed in and offered light refreshments before being seated in the dining room for the reception. After being seated, you’ll be treated to a four course light meal, beginning with a hot soup served with special holiday breads. A wide variety of tea-sized sandwiches will follow, including roast beef, seared chicken, salmon, and of course...cucumber! Next will be the salad course, featuring a seafood salad , served with a cheese tray adorned with fruit. The grand finale will be a beautiful display of sweets and pastries. The meal will be accompanied by your choice of teas, paired to complement the meal. Your hosts are prepared to accommodate dietary restictions! The Setting....The Lasker Inn is a Grand Colonial Victorian home, built in 1870 by attorney Marcus McLemore. It survived the Great 1900 Storm, and was restored after Hurricane Ike to its former glory. Our guests are welcome to come early and take photos in the sitting rooms, especially since the Inn will be beautifully decorated for Christmas. Your Hosts.... A few years ago, Cheryl and Harry Palmer along with their like-minded friends, Whitney and Erick Wiggs, decided it would be fun to host a Victorian tea during the Galveston Historical Foundation’s Dickens on the Strand Festival. We have loved and attended the festival throught the years (always in some sort of costume!), and support the efforts to retain Galveston’s historic heritage. For questions regarding our tea reception, please email Cheryl at the link provided.
