Join us for an evening of discovery and dialogue. Grab a glass of wine, along with some light hors d'oeuvres, and listen as George Smart speaks about his passion for, and commitment to, the preservation of NC Modernist homes in his lecture Mayberry Modernism. George will speak at 6:30. The gallery will be curated with featured lots from our upcoming Winter Modern Art & Design Auction and Luxury & Collector Vehicles Auction. About Mayberry Modernism Despite many Modernist houses aging over the 50-year mark, city councils and preservation groups have a hard time considering Modernist houses to be historic – perhaps because 50 years later, many still look like the future. With bulldozers destroying mid-century Modernist houses daily, many "livable works of art" remain threatened by rising land prices and disinterested heirs. George Smart of NCModernist shares the story and the details of how his energetic and dedicated team of volunteers documented Modernist houses across North Carolina. Expect to gain knowledge of the basic principles of modernist design, why it’s important, and how easy it is to start a documentation and preservation effort - with nothing more than a car, a cell phone, and a laptop.
