The fourth lecture in our series will feature Dr. Martha Bireda presenting Reflections of a Colored Girl, a living history re-enactment. Dr. Bireda tells the story of a life as a "colored" girl growing up in the Jim Crow South, from the holler in Southwestern Virginia to the small fishing village of Punta Gorda on the Southwest coast of Florida. Life lessons are shared; how "colored" adapted, resisted, achieved, and even thrived in spite of the barriers imposed by Jim Crow laws and customs.
Dr. Martha Bireda is the Director of the Blanchard House Museum of African American History and Culture of Charlotte County. For over twenty-five years, she was a consultant and trainer for issues related to race, ethnicity, gender, and class for school districts, law enforcement agencies, and other organizations.
