Taming a Feral Cat?

I have been feeding a neighborhood cat for the last few weeks. While transferring the cat from the trap to the cage, she(?) lashed out and escaped. I'm assuming that this cat is feral, but am hoping that someone is able to dedicate the time and patience to tame her(?). I am not equipped to do so, but hate the thought of leaving her(?) outside if she was just frightened and is really able to be socialized. Any help is appreciated.
