Celebrating the launch of David Sokol's book, Hamptons Modern, this talk features architect Bryan Young and ‘Our Hamptons’ co-host Esperanza León.
In the current wave of speculative and custom development in the Hamptons and nationwide, the "modern farmhouse" has exerted a strong pull on home design. Historic agrarian buildings seem well-suited to adaptation: wide-span interiors accommodate the scale and open circulation of contemporary living; the exterior vocabulary is a rejoinder to the aggressive revivalism of the pre-Great Recession era. Yet thanks in part to its widespread adoption, the modern farmhouse movement has reached a crossroads. This panel discussion provides a brief survey of agricultural building and of that vernacular's hold on popular imagination. It also details emerging concerns about the modern farmhouse, in which the profession is identifying the phenomenon's functional and creative limitations, as well as architects' efforts to advance the dialogue.
