Bishop Dr. Darnell Gooch, Jr. hosts POPUP Church Memphis at The Cathedral of Praise Church of Memphis, Inc. (Iocated inside Buntyn Presbyterian Church). This event is in collaboration with Relationship Unleashed, a 501c3 nonprofit organization founded to fight against inequality for the LGBTQ community. POPUP Church occurs the 4th Sunday every month and is a church service devoted to addressing social, political, and civic issues plaguing our communities. POPUP Church Memphis is an intentional untraditional church event where all people are welcomed into a safe space to receive God's agape love, learn, and worship in truth and in spirit! The October series will address Homophobia from the pulpit as we explore and explain the 7 Scriptures commonly used to support homophobia. Dr. Matt Mathews will be our guest lecturer on this topic. Dr. Matt Mathews, Visiting Professor of Religion at Rhodes College, Professor Emeritus of Theology at Memphis Theological Seminar and ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church to explore those passages of Scripture wrongly used to terrorize and dehumanize LGBTQIA people. Rather than rely on popular misunderstandings and misuses of the Bible, let’s listen to what Bible scholars and theologians have to say about it. Come and discover that we can all be true to ourselves and true to the Bible while celebrating our diverse orientations and identities. We will focus on correcting the misunderstandings of those ‘texts of terror’ used to promote homophobia and dehumanize LGBTQIA people. Biographical InformationDr. Matt Mathews joined the faculty of Rhodes College in 2019 after retiring from Memphis Theological Seminary. He has taught theology for nearly twenty five years and specializes in the areas of historical and constructive theology, theological aesthetics, ecological theology, and theologies of gender and sexuality. Dr. Mathews is the co-author of Shaping the Christian Life: Worship and the Religious Affections (Westminster John Knox, 2006) and Dust and Breath: Faith, Health, and Why the Church Should Care about Both (Eerdmans, 2012).
