In 1917, a grisly Memphis murder sparked an angry mob’s thirst for vengeance. Without a trial, thousands of citizens would attend the public burning of the accused killer, a Black man named Ell Persons.
Civil Wrongs, an investigation project by the Institute for Public Service Reporting in collaboration with WKNO-FM, digs into the history of this injustice and the questions it still raises today.
Join us at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Memphis Listening Lab at Crosstown as we launch this radio and podcast series with a special event. We’ll preview the radio broadcast, then talk with local journalists, descendants and more. The event is free, but we ask that you register.
Civil Wrongs is made possible by Report for America, WKNO and the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change. Community support is provided by Gayle Rose, Jeanne Jemison, Becky Wilson, Ruby Bright and Jocelyn Wurzburg.
