Description
This Disney animation family film, about a Colombian family leading a magical existence until its magic is threatened, is “a triumph in every category: art, songs and heart,” writes Mark Kennedy for The Associated Press. “99 minutes of pure bliss,” writes G. Allen Johnson in the San Francisco Chronicle. “Consistently joyous,” writes Brian Truitt in USA Today. “Surprisingly intimate,” writes John Wenzel in The Denver Post. “Encanto” tells the story of the Madrigals, an extraordinary family whose members live in a fairy-tale house in a magical place called an Encanto hidden in the high jungle mountains of Colombia. The Encanto’s magic comes from an enchanted candle that keeps everything perfect and grants an extraordinary gift to each family member — except for Mirabel (the voice of Stephanie Beatriz), an awkward, nerdy, deeply feeling 15-year-old outcast. Mirabel’s sister Luisa (Jessica Darrow) has super strength. Her other sister, Isabel (Dianne Guerrero), can restore vegetation to life. Her cousin Antonio (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) can talk to animals. But Mirabel has nothing. Even so, Maribel eventually becomes the Madrigals’ last hope when she discovers the Encanto’s magic that passed her over is now in danger. Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway musical “Hamilton,” wrote songs for this fantasy musical comedy. The 2021 film runs 1 hour 39 minutes and is rated PG. Its 41 critic and festival honors include an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. The film’s trailer can be found on YouTube at tinyurl.com/Encanto-MoviesWSpirit. The screening will be followed by a facilitated discussion. Refreshments will be served. Attendees over age 12 are asked to contribute $10 a person.
