Paulette will offer a unique perspective and personal connection to the histories and meanings of various significant cultural sites in and around downtown Columbus that relate to African American cultural heritage. The event will begin with a meet and greet with Paulette at 5:45 pm at the Landmark Columbus Foundation studio. And then the guided trip will begin promptly at 6 pm, and end back at the studio for refreshments and a conversation about what we saw on our trip, and connections we made along the way.Paulette RobertsRetired Teacher and Community VolunteerPaulette grew up in Hazard, Kentucky, a coal mining town, and has always been interested in history. She was actively recruited by BCSC where she was a teacher for thirty-three years. When she came to Columbus in 1970 there was a lot of upheaval in the city, and it took six months before she laid eyes on another Black person.History has taken her from seeing the Klu Klux Klan March downtown, to participating in equality marches, to researching her family history from a great, great grandmother back to a slave owner. Her activities here have included raising a family, gathering historical information about Columbus's Black community, portraying Harriet Tubman at events, co-writing a Black history workbook, Given speeches on MLK day, creating a tutoring program at Second Baptist Church, serving on the board at NAACP, and directing many Black history activities. The goal of the Local Social Design Trips is to bring awareness to Columbus’ design history and heritage that shapes the modern legacy of Columbus with an easy, fun, after-work event to do with your friends, family, and colleagues. With this event, Landmark Columbus Foundation is excited to highlight members of our community.
