The personal responsibility argument as a reason to quash student loan forgiveness is BULLSHIT. If a student is from a working class family, they don't have many choices. It boils down to the following: A) Don't go to college, and be a wage slave for your entire life. B) Enter a trade apprenticeship. (There are a very limited number of opportunities, and a mechanical aptitude plus physical strength are required) C) Join the military. (Only poor people will be fighting in our wars.) D) Go to college, and take on a huge debt. (This turns out to be the only viable choice for most working class students. It is not a good choice, but the best of several bad choices.) Children of the affluent are not affected by this, and ethnic minorities are in this position far more than white people. Student loan forgiveness is fair. Free college is even more fair.
