Locations: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh – Downtown Branch Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office Deputy Constables have the statutory duty of "preserving the peace" at and during the election until the election board has finished counting the vote. Safeguarding the right of our citizens to vote safely and without interference is essential to our democracy. You "preserve the peace" during an election by being on-site during the election, ensuring that all indoor and outdoor conduct is orderly, keeping a clear path to the polling place, and making sure that no disorderly conduct occurs in the room so that the Judge of Elections and his/her board will be able to carry out their responsibilities. You will be supervised and supported by the Constable for the City of Pittsburgh, 2nd Ward throughout the day. Deputy Constables will NOT be permitted to carry weapons of any kind except as expressly authorized by the Constable. Start time: 07:00 (7:00 AM) End time: 20:00 (8:00 PM)** **You are required to stay at the polling place until the Judge of Elections is FINISHED (or at the very least, until he or she is finished with the "counting of votes".) It would be preferred that the Deputy Constable stay to accompany the Judge of Elections to his or her car with the election supplies when he or she is ready to head back to the Board of Elections. If you are interested, please reply with your resume and contact information. More information will be provided to those who apply. Your duties include: *Keeping the peace. *Keeping a clear pathway for voters to enter and exit. This includes the entire pathway from the public road to the voting machines. Voters always have the right of way! *Keeping all people at least 10 feet from the entrance to the building unless they are in the process of voting. *Closing the line at 8:00 PM. About Voters' rights inside the polling place: *No "political activity" is allowed inside the polling place. *No "campaigning" is allowed inside the polling place. *Conduct - No one is allowed to DO something (inside the building) to influence someone else's vote. *However, voters in line to vote or leaving the voting area may wear or hold anything(campaign literature, buttons, hats, shirts, etc.) as long as the item is "passive," not active, and as long as there is no campaigning/electioneering/politicking.
