Description
The Celebrate! Maya Project, an Arkansas-based nonprofit providing educational programming rooted in the spirit of Maya Angelou, is celebrating eight years in 2022. The two-day celebration includes the 8th annual FriendRaiser & Celebration on Oct. 20 at Trapnall Hall in downtown Little Rock from 6-8 p.m. It'll be an evening of fun, music, poetry, food and gratitude. It'll also feature Damen Tolbert, Chicago and Arkansas musician, poet and educator. On Oct. 21, the Celebrate! Maya Project, in collaboration with Philander Smith College, will sponsor a lecture and screening of “Marian Anderson: The Whole World in Her Hands” featuring award-winning documentarian and filmmaker Rita Coburn. The event will be held at the Henry R. Kendall Center - Nugent Conference Center on the Philander Smith College campus. The Celebrate! Maya Project works with schools, organizations and communities across Arkansas to present writing, history and arts programs that help youth learn about Angelou’s legacy. The nonprofit awards academic and poetry scholarships annually to students who create original poetry in remembrance of Angelou and who demonstrate academic excellence and community service. The organization focuses specifically on the delta, the area with the greatest need. “This celebration is an opportunity for us to say thank you to our friends and supporters,” said Celebrate! Maya Project founder Janis F. Kearney. “This is an especially exciting time for us as we move to our next phase: fundraising for a home for the Celebrate! Maya Project. With this space, we’ll serve the educational and social-emotional needs of children and address the gaps left by the pandemic.” Suggested contributions to the anniversary celebration are $100. All donations will go toward Celebrating Maya Scholarships and Emerging Poetry Awards. For more information, please visit www.celebratemayaproject.org or email [email protected].
