Join the Comparative Literature DUG for an evening of literary and academic conversation with the New York Times bestselling author and translator R.F. Kuang! This event will include a lecture on topics related to her writing and PhD research, followed by a Q&A, book signing, and reception. Copies of Kuang's latest novel, Babel: An Arcane History, will be available for purchase in the lobby outside the lecture hall prior to the event. Light refreshments will be offered in the lobby during the signing. Kuang is the award-winning, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Poppy War trilogy and Babel: An Arcane History, as well as the forthcoming Yellowface. A Marshall Scholar, she has an MPhil in Chinese Studies from Cambridge and an MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies from Oxford; she is now pursuing a PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale, where she studies diaspora, contemporary Chinese literature, and Asian American literature. The Comparative Literature Department Undergraduate Group (DUG) is a student peer advising committee running academic and social events for Comp Lit concentrators and all interested students, such as open houses, research panels, tea hours, and department celebrations. Seating will be first-come, first served. To keep the entry process efficient, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes prior to the event’s start. Getting There: MacMillan Hall is located on Thayer St, next to the Sciences Library and across the street from Ruth J. Simmons Quad. DUG leaders will be posted at the front entrance and accessible entrance to check tickets. Navigating the building: Restrooms are located to the right of the lecture hall doors. We ask that you only enter and exit the lecture hall from doors staffed by a DUG leader, especially if you need to exit the lecture hall at any point during the talk. Accessibility: A wheelchair-accessible entrance to the venue is located to the left side of the main entrance. DUG leaders will be present at the doors to assist you if required. COVID Policy: As a courtesy to our speaker and wider community, we ask that all attendees wear masks indoors when not actively eating or drinking. Attendees with active symptoms of COVID and/or a positive test should not attend. Bag Policy: To ensure that all attendees have sufficient room in the venue, bags larger than a standard backpack must be left outside the venue with a DUG leader. Please do not place bags on seats or in the aisles. Photography & Recording: Unauthorized recording of any portion of the talk is prohibited. No flash photography. The Comparative Literature Department will have a staff photographer on site. Fire Safety: Sitting or standing in the aisles and doorways is not permitted. Smoking is not allowed inside any University building. In the event of a fire alarm, please proceed calmly to a nearby exit, leave the building and move away from the doorway.
