Topic: Reading and Dyslexia: What Every Family Should Know
Lara will provide family members with information about the basics of reading and how and why some people struggle with learning to read, including those with dyslexia. She will also present key information from Texas dyslexia legislation that applies to all public schools in Texas.
Speaker bio:
Lara Speights is the Vice President of Family Support and Adult Literacy at Neuhaus Education Center in Houston, Texas. She is a Certified Academic Language Therapist, Licensed Dyslexia Therapist, Reading Specialist, and English as a Second Language teacher. She earned a M.Ed. in Language and Literacy from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education and a B.A. in Spanish and English from Texas A&M University. Before joining Neuhaus, Lara spent a decade working in public charter schools in the Rio Grande Valley and Houston area as a classroom teacher, dyslexia interventionist, and instructional coach. She has widespread experience collaborating with and advocating for family members of students in special populations such as English language learners and students with learning disabilities.
Mary Murrill North is a member of the Family Support Team and Special Project Coordinator at Neuhaus Education Center in Houston, Texas. She has a M.Ed. in Educational Psychology and has been on the Neuhaus staff for over 20 years. Before joining Neuhaus she taught for many years in the public and private schools in Texas and North Carolina. Most of her career at Neuhaus has been in the Family Support Office providing a listening ear, information, and resources to parents of struggling readers.
