The high maternal mortality for African American women remains one of the United States' most significant public health disparities. But did you know that disproportionately high maternal health outcomes are not just a reality for Black women in the United States? African Nations lead the world in the worst maternal mortality statistics, placing Black women at the center of a global crisis! There is a need to bring awareness, advocacy, and action to this horrifying reality. The Circle City Chapter of the Links, Incorporated, has committed to educating our community, advocating for policy solutions, and actively working to address this issue. The Circle City Chapter of The Links, Incorporated in collaboration with the Madam Walker Legacy Center and the Indiana Minority Health Coalition, will be hosting a viewing of the film Aftershock, followed by a panel discussion on Thursday, September 22, 2022, from 6:00 PM- 8:00 PM at the Madam Walker Theatre! ---------- Did you know: In Indiana, the maternal mortality rate for Black women is 2.5x the national average.In our state, this crisis extends to Black children as well, with the Black infant mortality rate being nearly 2x the rate of white children. Across all 50 states, Indiana ranks 48th in maternal mortality, trailed by only Louisiana and Georgia.If Indiana were to institute a total abortion ban, the number of pregnancy-related deaths among Black women would increase by 33 percent.Sub-Saharan Africans suffer from the highest maternal mortality ratio – 533 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, or 200,000 maternal deaths a year. This is over two-thirds (68 percent) of all maternal deaths per year worldwide.Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia account for 86 per cent of maternal deaths worldwide.Globally, over 800 women are dying each day from complications in pregnancy and childbirth, and for every woman who dies, approximately 20 others suffer serious injuries, infections, or disabilities.Panelist: To Be Annouced Soon This event is free to the public!
