Códice Maya de México: Discovery and Authenticity of the Oldest Maya Codex Symposium in Homage to Baltazar Brito GuadarramaNovember 5th, Cal State LA Our 2022 Maya Symposium, organized by The Getty Research Institute and the Art History Society of California State University, Los Angeles, will host the researchers involved in authenticating the Maya Codex Of Mexico. This codex is the most recently found and the oldest of the four surviving pre-Hispanic Maya books. Speakers will explore the document’s mysterious origins as well as its pigmentation, material composition, artistic iconography, astronomical uses, and socio-political meanings. Talks will also cover the procedures used for dating the codex and the in-depth work scholars undertook to prove that it is the oldest surviving Mesoamerican book. This event will take place at Cal State LA in the State Playhouse Theater. Seating will be limited and will be given on first come first serve basis. Additional seats will be available at another location on campus with streaming capabilities. Guest check-in will begin at 8am, the event will begin at 9:30am. There will be a short break after the third speaker, lunch will begin after the 7th speaker. After lunch we will have four more speakers before a short break, we will then conclude our event with two speakers and the closing remarks. There will be a reception held immediately following until 7:30pm.
