Description

October 29th- Aaron Jonah Lewis and Ragtime Banjo Revival. Join us for some fun with three fine artists and friends. Aaron Jonah Lewis, Grace van't Hoff and Alex Belhaj share the stage for a night of music celebrating the banjo. Aaron Jonah Lewis - Lewis has appeared on dozens of recordings from bluegrass and old time to traditional jazz, contemporary experimental and Turkish classical music projects. As a banjoist, Lewis explores some interesting veins in the roots of Old Time, Bluegrass, Ragtime and Jazz music. Aaron Jonah Lewis is passionate about sharing early fingerstyle banjo music. They bring light to the fact that classic banjo was the most popular form of music a hundred years ago, though today it’s almost entirely forgotten. They are “trying to keep (classic banjo) alive and spread it around, as it’s a delightful style that brings joy and connects us to the depth of our shared American history.” Grace van't Hof - Grace van’t Hof discovered the banjo in high school when she built a five-string prototype that won second place in a statewide science olympiad. Inspired by her classical music background and artists from Charlie Poole to Puccini, her banjo, ukulele, and accordion playing proffer equal parts rhythm and ornamentation to projects of varied musical genres, though she has never strayed far from the blood harmonies of groups like the Louvin Brothers and the Boswell Sisters. A founding member of both the Grammy-nominated group Della Mae, and the internationally known oldtime group Bill and the Belles, van’t Hof’s career has taken her around the world. In addition to performances with Sinner Friends, she also tours the U.S. and beyond with the bluegrass group Chris Jones & the Night Drivers. Alex Belhaj- Alex Belhaj is a guitarist based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he leads his own Crescent City Quartet and Quintet in addition to playing folk music and original music. He also worked with the James Dapogny Quartet, Paul Klinger's Easy Street Jazz Band, the Cakewalkin' Jass Band and guitarist Joe Summers before moving to New Orleans in 2015. Aaron is always entertaining, surrounded with talented musicians, well respected in all circles as a talent to be recognized and enjoyed. Join us!
